Eastside Trail Progressing!

The Eastside Trail has been approved. It has been shortened to stay within the cost estimate and grant amounts. The trail will only include portions north of the railroad tracks.

The trail will be off-street (a separated trail) on the north side of South Beach Road, starting at the east end of the Lake Road Trail, and proceeding along South Beach to the intersection of Eastshore Drive. (The previous alternative to use Joanne Lane is not longer the preferred path).

From Eastshore Dr. the trail will proceed on-street to the railroad crossing bridge, and stop there.

Costs to continue the trail on the bridge and on Hwy KB south of the railroad tracks were prohibitive, due to the steep grades near the bridge, and the necessity of new storm-water management components as the trail approached downtown.

Funding appears intact for this segment north if the tracks, between the DOT, DNR and Altoona Outdoors. Remaining steps before construction include detailed design engineering, permitting and construction easements. Stay tuned for news. We hope to see the trail built in the spring of this year!
